Is Home Battery Storage Really Worth It With Solar?

It’s one of the most common questions we get asked once someone’s had solar panels fitted, or is thinking about getting them. Battery storage sounds like the obvious next step, store the power you generate during the day and use it after dark instead of buying it back from the grid, but whether it’s actually worth it depends far more on your household than most generic answers let on.

What a battery is actually doing for you

A home battery stores the solar electricity your panels generate but you don’t use straight away. Instead of that surplus being exported to the grid for a per-unit payment, it sits in the battery until you need it, typically in the evening when the panels have stopped generating but your household is using the most power.

The value of that stored electricity depends entirely on what you’d otherwise be paying for it, and what you’d otherwise be getting paid to export it. That’s where the real answer to “is it worth it” starts to diverge from household to household.

Why your usage pattern matters more than the battery itself

If you’re out at work all day and home mainly in the evening, a lot of the electricity your panels generate goes to waste unless it’s stored somewhere. In that case, a battery lets you capture power you’d otherwise be exporting for a relatively low return, and use it later at full retail value instead. That’s a genuinely strong case for storage.

If you’re home during the day, running the washing machine, dishwasher, and other appliances while the sun’s out, you’re already using a good chunk of your generation directly, and a battery has less spare capacity to work with. The case is still there, but it’s weaker, and it’s exactly the kind of detail a generic online calculator won’t know about your household.

Seasonality plays a part too. In summer, most well-designed solar systems generate far more than a typical household uses during daylight hours, which is exactly when a battery earns its keep, soaking up the surplus for the evening instead of it going to the grid for a fraction of the value. In winter, when generation drops off significantly and there’s often little or no surplus left by mid-afternoon, a battery has far less to work with from solar alone, which is where pairing it with a cheap overnight tariff tends to make the bigger difference.

Time-of-use electricity tariffs change the picture again. If you’re on a tariff with cheap overnight rates, a battery can be charged from the grid at the cheapest time and used to cover expensive peak-rate hours, on top of whatever it’s storing from your solar panels. This kind of arrangement can make batteries worthwhile even for homes that don’t have solar at all, which is exactly why standalone battery storage has become its own category of home upgrade rather than just a solar add-on.

Where a battery can, and can’t, be installed

This is where the safety side of things becomes genuinely important, and it’s not something to leave to guesswork. Domestic batteries use lithium-ion chemistry, and while modern systems are designed with safety in mind, where and how they’re installed matters enormously.

New fire safety requirements under PAS 63100, the British Standard specifically covering fire safety for battery energy storage systems in dwellings, have formally banned batteries from being installed in lofts. According to reporting from Homebuilding & Renovating, lofts present multiple problems for lithium-ion batteries, including poor ventilation, extreme summer temperatures, and the fact that a fire there sits directly above sleeping areas. Batteries also shouldn’t be sited in escape routes, landings, staircases, or rooms used for sleeping.

The safer, recommended locations are typically a detached garage or outbuilding, an external wall-mounted enclosure kept well away from doors and windows, or a utility or plant room with proper fire separation. Getting this decision right isn’t optional extra caution, it’s a fire safety requirement, and it needs someone who genuinely understands your property to make the call.

Sizing is another decision that shouldn’t be guessed at

Batteries are sold in a range of capacities, and bigger isn’t automatically better. A battery sized well beyond what your household typically uses in an evening may rarely reach full charge from solar alone, especially in winter, which limits how much value it can actually deliver. Undersize it, and you’ll run out of stored power before your usage tails off for the night.

Getting this right means looking at your actual electricity usage over time, ideally with real data rather than rough estimates, alongside the size of your solar system if you have one. It’s another reason a proper assessment matters more than picking whatever capacity a supplier happens to be promoting that month.

Why the installer matters as much as the battery you choose

Because of the standards involved, battery storage installation should only be carried out by someone properly qualified and up to date on current requirements. The Microgeneration Certification Scheme runs a dedicated battery installation standard, MIS 3012, which sets out the technical and quality requirements installers have to meet to be MCS certified for battery work specifically, separate from solar PV certification.

An installer working to this standard, and to BS 7671 wiring regulations alongside PAS 63100 fire safety requirements, should be assessing your property properly before recommending where a battery goes, not fitting it wherever’s most convenient. Why now might be a good time to look into it

There’s a genuine financial incentive at play at the moment too. Battery storage systems, whether fitted alongside solar or retrofitted as a standalone system, currently qualify for 0% VAT under the government’s energy-saving materials relief. According to Solar Energy UK, this relief runs until 31 March 2027, after which it’s due to revert to the standard reduced rate. It’s not a reason to rush into a decision that isn’t right for your home, but it is worth factoring into the timing if you’re already considering it.

What to check before you commit

Before agreeing to any battery installation, it’s worth asking where exactly the installer is proposing to site it, and why. Ask whether they’re MCS certified specifically for battery storage under MIS 3012, not just for solar PV. Check they’re familiar with PAS 63100 and can explain how your specific property meets its requirements. And ask how the battery would interact with your existing or planned solar system and your electricity tariff, since that’s what actually determines whether it earns its keep.

A good installer will walk you through all of this without being asked twice, because it’s exactly the kind of assessment a genuinely tailored recommendation depends on.

Getting an honest answer for your home
