If you’re weighing up an electric car, or you’ve already got one on order, chances are you’ve searched for a straightforward number for what a home charger will cost. Unfortunately, there isn’t one. What a charger costs to install depends heavily on your specific property, and treating it as a fixed price job is one of the easiest ways to end up with a quote that doesn’t reflect what you actually need.
Instead of guessing at an average, it’s more useful to understand what actually goes into a home EV charger installation, so you know what questions to ask and what a fair, tailored quote should account for.
Your existing electrics set the starting point
Before anything else, an installer needs to know what your consumer unit and incoming supply can actually handle. Some older properties need upgrades to the consumer unit before a charger can be safely added, while others already have enough capacity. This is exactly the kind of thing that should be assessed on site, not guessed at over the phone.
Distance matters too. If your consumer unit is close to where you park, the cabling run is simple. If your car sits on a driveway at the front of the house while the consumer unit is at the back, or you’re charging at a detached garage across the garden, that means more cable, more containment, and potentially some groundworks to route it safely and tidily. Homes with off-street parking but no nearby wall to mount a charger on may also need a post-mounted unit instead, which changes the job again.

Getting it wrong isn’t just a compliance issue, it’s a genuine safety one.
Why smart charging is now a legal requirement, not an optional extra
Since 30 June 2022, most new home and workplace chargers sold in Great Britain have had to meet smart charging requirements under the Electric Vehicles (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021. In practice, that means your charger has to be capable of communicating over the internet, retain its smart functionality even if you switch energy supplier, and keep working to charge your car even if it briefly loses that connection. This isn’t a nice-to-have feature bolted on by manufacturers, it’s the law, and it’s worth checking any charger you’re quoted for actually complies.
Why a qualified, insured electrician matters as much as the equipment
EV charger installation involves running a new dedicated circuit, and that makes it notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations in England and Wales. According to NICEIC’s guidance for householders, an electrician registered with a competent person scheme such as NICEIC or NAPIT can self-certify the work, issue the correct electrical certificate, and notify building control on your behalf. Use someone who isn’t registered, and the job has to be separately notified to building control and inspected, which adds cost and time you didn’t need to spend.
Qualifications are tightening too. Installers should hold specialist training such as the City & Guilds 2921-34 award for domestic and small commercial EV charging installations, and from October 2026, every individual physically carrying out EV chargepoint installations will be required to hold their own Level 3 EV qualification, not just work under someone else’s certification. That matters for your safety and your insurance. A poorly installed charger circuit, run by someone without the right training or insurance, can leave you with a fire risk, an invalid buildings insurance policy, or a charger that simply doesn’t perform reliably when you need it most.
It’s always worth asking to see evidence of competent person scheme registration and current public liability insurance before work starts, and confirming in writing that you’ll receive a proper Electrical Installation Certificate once it’s finished.

Before agreeing to any EV charger quote, it’s worth asking whether the installer is registered with a recognised competent person scheme, whether they hold the relevant EV-specific qualification, and whether they carry public liability insurance you can see evidence of. Ask whether the charger itself is compliant with the Smart Charge Points Regulations, and whether the quote is based on an actual site assessment of your consumer unit, cable route, and parking setup, rather than a generic figure.
