It’s a fair worry to have. Solar panels sit on your roof permanently, in all weathers, and the idea of adding that kind of load to a structure you can’t easily inspect yourself is unsettling. The reassuring answer is that most UK roofs cope with solar panels perfectly well without any reinforcement at all. The honest answer is that “most” isn’t “all”, and knowing the difference matters.
How much weight are we actually talking about
Solar panels, along with their mounting rails and fixings, typically add somewhere in the region of 15 to 25 kilograms per square metre to a roof. Spread across a whole roof slope, that’s a genuine but generally modest addition to what a well-built roof structure is already designed to carry, including its own tiles or slates, plus the wind and snow loads it was built to withstand in the first place.
The bigger consideration usually isn’t the static weight sitting there quietly, but the additional forces from wind uplift and snow loading acting on a now less flexible, mounted surface, along with the concentrated load at each individual fixing point rather than weight spread evenly across the whole roof. UK roofs are designed against loading standards set out in BS EN 1991, and the Microgeneration Certification Scheme’s solar PV installation standard, MIS 3002, requires installers to account for exactly this when they design a mounting layout, checking wind zone, roof pitch, and fixing spacing rather than just bolting panels down wherever’s convenient. That’s a more technical question than most homeowners can answer by eye, which is exactly why it shouldn’t be answered by eye.
When a full structural calculation is actually required
Not every installation needs a bespoke calculation from a structural engineer. Under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme’s solar PV installation standard, MIS 3002, a structural calculation is generally only required for residential roofs when the installer judges the roof to be potentially marginal, which typically becomes more likely on roofs over around 15 years old, roofs already showing signs of wear, or roofs carrying heavier traditional materials like slate. For a large proportion of straightforward, modern, well-maintained pitched roofs, a competent installer’s own assessment against the relevant loading standards is enough.
The point is that this judgement call has to be made properly, by someone qualified to make it, rather than assumed away because reinforcement sounds like an inconvenient extra step.
When you genuinely need a structural engineer involved
For roofs that don’t fall neatly into the straightforward category, an independent structural engineer’s assessment is the right next step, not an optional extra. The Institution of Structural Engineers, the UK’s professional body for chartered structural engineers, has published its own guidance on exactly this question. Their journal article on assessing existing roofs for the addition of solar panels draws on assessment advice originally developed by Hampshire County Council, which is a useful reminder that this isn’t an abstract national issue, it’s guidance shaped by exactly the kind of housing stock found right here in Hampshire.
A structural engineer’s assessment is particularly worth having for older properties, roofs with unusual or historic construction, roofs carrying heavier materials such as slate or timber shingle, and larger solar arrays that concentrate more load across the structure. If your installer flags any of this during their initial survey, that’s not them creating extra work for the sake of it, it’s them doing their job properly.
Older and period properties around Basingstoke need extra care
Basingstoke and the surrounding villages, including Old Basing, Sherborne St John, and Oakley, have plenty of older and in some cases listed properties, and these need a different level of scrutiny again. Historic England, the government’s statutory adviser on the historic environment, is clear on this point in its own guidance on installing photovoltaics: an assessment of the roof structure should be undertaken by a structural engineer to ensure that damage doesn’t occur as a result of fitting panels, and that assessment needs to account for a historic roof’s specific tolerances, not generic modern assumptions.
Traditional roofing materials also rely on breathability that panels can interfere with if they’re fitted without proper spacing, and access for future repairs needs to be considered too. If you own a period property in the area and you’re considering solar, this is a conversation worth having early, not after panels are already on order.
If your roof does need extra support
Needing some form of reinforcement isn’t the end of the road for going solar, and it doesn’t necessarily mean a major structural project either. Depending on what a structural engineer finds, the fix can be relatively modest, such as adding noggins or binders between existing rafters to spread the load more evenly, or sistering, which means fixing an additional length of timber alongside an existing rafter to strengthen it without removing anything.
In some cases, the more practical answer isn’t reinforcing the roof at all, but changing the approach to the installation instead. That might mean adjusting the fixing pattern to spread load across more rafters, choosing lighter panels, or in the case of flat roofs, moving to a ballasted mounting system that distributes weight differently rather than fixing directly through the roof covering. A good structural engineer’s report won’t just say yes or no, it’ll set out what your options actually are.
Why the right installer catches this before it becomes a problem
This is exactly where having a properly qualified, insured electrician carry out your initial assessment matters. A good installer won’t simply assume your roof is fine because most roofs are. They’ll check its age, condition, and construction, understand when the MCS thresholds mean a fuller calculation is needed, and know when to bring in an independent structural engineer rather than pushing ahead regardless.

Before committing to a solar installation, it’s worth asking your installer directly how they’ve assessed your roof’s suitability, whether they consider it to fall within MCS’s straightforward category or whether it needs a full structural calculation, and if the latter, whether that calculation will be carried out by a qualified structural engineer rather than estimated in-house. If your property is listed or in a conservation area, ask specifically how that’s been factored in too.
A reputable installer will have clear, confident answers to all of this, because it’s a standard part of doing the job properly, not an inconvenient extra step to talk you out of.
